G70

2022 Genesis G70 Launch Edition

The manual transmission option is discontinued. #SavetheManuals Also, the larger, more powerful 4-cylinder and V6 engines we were expecting did not arrive. The Stinger, the Kia cousin to the G70 got a 2.5 turbo, but the G70 uses last year's 2.0.

The G70 is refreshed for 2022, inside and out. On the outside, its new, split headlights bring a family resemblence to the GV80 and G80. On the inside a larger (10 1/4-inch) multimedia touchscreen anchors the dashboard.

Highway Driving Assist raises the autonomous level slightly (please, no watching Harry Potter movies!). Safe Exit Warning is also new, and standard; it uses the sensors for the blind spot warning system to alert driver and passengers if a car is approaching before they open their doors. A new Blind Spot View Monitor is standard on Sport Prestige and shows the vehicle's blind spots using a camera when the turn signals are activated.

A variable sport exhaust system is available, standard on Sport: quiet when cruising and louder when flooring it.

A new front-center airbag helps protect driver and front passenger from injuries that can occur when their heads strike during a serious collision. A rear occupant alert warns the driver at the end of a trip to check the back seat if a rear door was opened earlier.

Heated front seats and navigation are now standard. A heated steering wheel is standard on Standard AWD models.

A Launch Edition gets unique 19-inch wheels, matte white or gray paint and a black and red interior. It's based on the top-level 3.3T Sport Prestige.

The 3.5 turbo engine is now only offered with all-wheel drive. 2.5T remains available in rear or all-wheel drive. 3.5T models are also now all "Sport" models: 3.5T AWD Sport and 3.5T AWD Sport Prestige. The Sport models get unique front fascias and bumpers and a dark, glossy grille finish. Sport Prestige adds rear-wheel steering that can steer the rear wheels in phase at higher speeds to sharpen handling and stabilize lane changes. At lower speeds they turn out of phase to reduce the turning circle.

New, standard Highway Driving Assist II brings a limited amount of autonomous driving, allowing the driver to remove hands from the steering wheel on certain well-marked highway systems, though a monitor ensures eyes stay on the road. The system will change lanes when the turn signal indicates, keep a steady distance behind other vehicles and come to a complete stop and restart in heavy traffic.

GV70

2022 Genesis GV70

A smaller, sportier SUV/crossover than the GV80, the new GV70 does not offer a third row. Although its footprint is smaller, it offers the same powertrains as the bigger GV80: 2.5T turbocharged 4-cylinder and a 3.5T turbocharged V6. All-wheel drive is standard on both, as is an 8-speed automatic transmission.

A full range of safety equipment is standard: Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go, rear Park Distance Warning, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Driver Attention Warning, Rear Occupant Alert, and Advanced Rear Occupant Alert.

Seating for five is ample, with 104 cubic feet of passenger space. Cargo space is also good: 28.9 cubic feet with the rear seats in place, 56.9 with them folded.
